KCC Farmers Market

Last Saturday was an adventure.  Kelly (another wwoofer)and I decided to check out a farmers market that Kahumana Farms may try to be apart of in January.  Because of the bus schedule and location of this farm, we had to leave at 6:30 am for the bus.  Luckily it was right on time, however we forgot that the gates to Kahumana are locked at night/early morning.  The bus showed up and the only thing we could do was climb and then jump.  If we missed that bus, we would have to wait another hour and probably miss our transfer.  We got on the bus and the driver thought we were trying to escape the farm, but we assured her that was not the case!  We got on the bus and there were only a few people on as early as us.  One of the bus passengers had her pet with her, a white bunny named Bella.

We made good timing and made our transfer. The bus system is a little confusing but everybody on the bus was very nice and accommodating.  We got off at Kapiolani Community College and eventually found the farmers market.  It was 3 rows long and filled with produce, honey, popsicle, pineapple, mac nuts, coffee etc. I didn't know where to start - so I got coffee.  We walked around and bought a few things for Sunday nights meal.  All of the wwoofers decided that on Sundays we were going to start to make a group dinner using mostly stuff from the farm.  This week Min made pork chops, Kelly and I made guacamole and salsa, Kelii made swiss chard and mashed casava and Max made these fried veggie balls (made from all ingredients from the farm).

After walking around and shopping, we eventually decided that there must be some farmer that lives in Waianae as well.  We came across Naked Cow, a dairy farm that is located just around the corner from us.

One of the owners Monique was there and she said if we helped her break down the farm stand, we could get a ride back.  Sounded good to us, so we walked around and had some fried green tomatoes until she was ready to pack up.  All in all it was a great day - met some other farmers and also got offered a farm stand job at Naked Cow.  We got the call today (Friday) and we will be training tomorrow morning (5 AM!!!).  Monique will pick us up right at Kahumana and then set up with us for the first time and then drive us back to the farm in time for lunch!

Expect more pictures from the farmers market this weekend!
